The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has reiterated its commitment to supporting human rights defenders, highlighting their crucial role in fostering fundamental rights and safeguarding human dignity. The Commission emphasizes that the work of these defenders is essential for creating a just and inclusive society, as well as reinforcing the foundations of democracy in Fiji.
In its statement, the Commission pointed out that the Constitution upholds the rights to freedom of opinion, expression, peaceful assembly, and association, which are vital for civic engagement, accountability, and national progress. However, it also urged that these rights must be exercised with a sense of responsibility and not be manipulated to propagate hate, harassment, or incite violence.
This affirmation comes in the wake of troubling incidents following Human Rights Day 2025, where activists faced online abuse. The Commission denounced such actions, stating they infringe upon the rights of others, compromise human dignity, and fracture social unity. It called for an end to all forms of intimidation and harassment, emphasizing that human rights defenders, particularly women, should be enabled to perform their duties safely, whether online or offline.
Further, the Commission reminded the government of its international obligations under various treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, to create a supportive environment for advocacy. It urged the Government, parliamentary members, institutions, and communities to safeguard human rights defenders, encourage respectful dialogues, and hold accountable those who breach others’ rights.
Recognizing that differing opinions are a natural part of society, the Commission urged that hate speech and hostility are unacceptable in Fiji. By safeguarding human rights defenders, the society ultimately protects its own integrity and values. This call for unity and respect is a hopeful message that encourages a stronger, more cohesive community moving forward.
