Fiji Sugar Workers Get Early Diwali Pay

Fiji Sugar Workers Get Early Diwali Pay

Thousands of workers in Fiji’s sugar industry, including cane cutters, lorry operators, and harvester drivers, will receive their payments in advance of the Diwali festival. This decision comes as a result of close collaboration between the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry and the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). The shift ensures that workers can celebrate the festival with their families without financial stress.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, responded to requests from industry workers who expressed concerns about receiving their wages after Diwali. Recognizing the importance of the celebration, Singh worked with the FSC to expedite the payment process. As a result, payments will now be processed on Monday, enabling thousands of industry workers and their families to prepare for Diwali comfortably.

The Ministry has confirmed that a total of $5 million will be disbursed, encompassing payments for various roles critical to the sugar industry, including cane cutters, harvester operators, and transport providers. This timely financial support reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare and livelihoods of all individuals working in Fiji’s sugar sector.

This announcement parallels previous initiatives aimed at boosting the economic stability of sugarcane farmers. Earlier, the government had also announced a record payment rate of $105.08 per tonne for sugarcane, underscoring a broader effort to support the farming community, especially in light of challenges posed by climate change.

Singh expressed gratitude for the FSC’s timely actions, reinforcing the government’s dedication to recognizing and uplifting those who contribute significantly to the sugar industry. As Diwali approaches, this early payment not only alleviates financial pressure but also serves as a gesture of appreciation for the hardworking individuals who play a vital role in Fiji’s economy. The collaborative efforts between government and industry stakeholders set a hopeful tone for the festive season, allowing workers and their families to celebrate with dignity and joy.
