The Sugar Industry Tribunal has revealed the anticipated termination dates for the 2025 crushing season at the Lautoka and Labasa sugar mills, as advised by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). Tribunal Registrar Timothy Brown made this announcement, indicating that the FSC submitted separate letters outlining the indicative dates according to Regulation 4.5(c)(ii) of the Master Award.
For the Lautoka Mill, the FSC has indicated that the expected end of crushing is set for 1 January 2026, while for the Labasa Mill, the anticipated termination date is 24 November 2025. Brown noted that the Tribunal engaged with the Sugar Cane Growers Council to review the advice received from the FSC.
“Assuming normal mill performance, these dates are the expected termination points for the 2025 season,” Brown stated. He assured that the Tribunal would keep a close watch on harvesting and crushing progress before finalizing the termination dates for each mill.
The final order to cease crushing will be communicated seven days prior, based on further consultations with both the Corporation and the Council. This proactive approach underscores the Tribunal’s commitment to effective management of the sugar industry, which remains a vital economic sector in Fiji.
Such planning is essential for maintaining productivity and efficiency within the industry, as it allows growers and harvesting teams ample time to prepare for the end of the season. As the industry gears up for the 2025 crushing season, stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate closely, fostering an environment that supports growth and stability for sugar cane farmers in Fiji.
