The sugar industry in Fiji faces another challenging situation as a fire erupted at the Rarawai Mill in Ba. The fire, which began at around 11:30 a.m., originated in the mill’s boiler section, causing a temporary suspension of operations. The incident adds to the recurring operational challenges faced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), known for dealing with previous mechanical issues, particularly with boiler systems.
Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, has requested a comprehensive incident report to determine whether the fire resulted from an accident, arson, or deliberate sabotage. The National Fire Authority will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the underlying cause of the blaze.
The disruption in Rarawai Mill’s operations has forced farmers to redirect their sugarcane deliveries to the Lautoka Mill. This logistical shift is being facilitated by the FSC, which has assured that additional costs incurred by farmers for transporting cane to Lautoka will be covered by the corporation. Singh has also reassured stakeholders of continuous support to minimize the impact of this disruption on the farmers’ livelihoods.
Imraan, a lorry driver from the Veisaru sector, expressed his adaptability to the situation, noting the supportive measures by the FSC, including assisting with transportation rates to ensure prompt delivery of sugarcane to the Lautoka Mill.
Operational challenges at the Rarawai Mill are not new; the facility has historically faced mechanical issues, contributing to temporary shutdowns. This incident underscores the necessity for improved safety protocols, rigorous maintenance, and better communication among industry stakeholders to enhance the mill’s resilience and stability.
