The brother of a former chief executive officer of the Fiji Sugar Corporation received an annual salary of $80,000, according to a statement made by Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh. The minister disclosed that this information was provided by the FSC board.
Singh mentioned that the individual, who traveled from South Africa to Fiji for a holiday, did not have a defined role within the FSC. He pointed out that proper hiring procedures were overlooked, as there was no advertisement for the position in the media.
“The individual had no job description. His duties seemed to be vague,” Singh commented. He also noted that, in addition to his salary, the FSC covered the individual’s travel expenses from South Africa to Fiji.
When questioned about whether he would escalate the issue to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, Singh stated that he would await guidance from the board before proceeding.
He made these remarks during an engagement with farmers in Bucaisau, near Labasa Town.
