The Fiji Government and sugar industry stakeholders are focused on ensuring the uninterrupted harvesting and processing of sugarcane following the closure of the Rarawai Mill. With 400,000 tonnes of cane from Sigatoka to Rakiraki left to be harvested and crushed, acting Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad emphasizes the collaborative efforts to tackle the challenge. The government and entities like the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and the Growers Council are committed to ensuring all cane is harvested and rerouted to the Lautoka Mill.

The Lautoka Mill is prepared to manage the vast quantity initially intended for both the Lautoka and Rarawai mills. Despite the disruption caused by the mill’s closure, the strategic plan aims to process all remaining cane by the end of December or early January even if repairs at Rarawai are delayed. This proactive approach aligns with efforts to stabilize the sugar industry, mitigate financial impacts on farmers due to increased transportation costs, and ensure job security for workers.

Following the fire at the Rarawai Mill, the government introduced a transport assistance scheme providing $15 per tonne to support farmers. This measure adds to the existing assistance, helping to alleviate the economic burden of moving cane to Lautoka. This year’s target is a significant 1.6 million tonnes, an increase from last year’s 1.3 million tonnes. The government’s interventions are angled towards achieving this goal while addressing immediate challenges posed by the mill’s suspension.

Moreover, these measures demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering resilience in Fiji’s sugar industry. Continuous stakeholder collaboration and infrastructure improvements are paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future. Despite ongoing operational challenges, there remains an optimistic outlook for the industry, highlighting the importance of enhanced safety protocols and robust operational procedures to prevent future disruptions.
