Fiji Sugar Minister Clashes With Ex-Board Member Over Farmer Outreach

A contentious exchange erupted at the Fijian Media Association’s Town Hall Meeting in Ba, where Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh faced off with former Fiji Sugar Corporation board member Arvin Singh. The heated dialogue was triggered when Arvin criticized the Minister for failing to engage directly with farmers, suggesting that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka instruct him to conduct more inclusive meetings instead of smaller gatherings.

Arvin recounted that he had never observed Singh at any farmer meetings, prompting the Minister to counter that he has indeed held discussions with farmers and accused Arvin of being absent from these events. Their confrontation escalated as Arvin claimed Singh’s frequent travel hindered his ability to connect with farmers, while Singh suggested that Arvin’s anger stemmed from his previous removal from the board.

The exchange caught the attention of Prime Minister Rabuka, who later expressed uncertainty about whether Singh is communicating farmer concerns to the Cabinet as a grower or purely in his ministerial capacity. He noted that Singh is diligently working on behalf of the sugar industry.

In defense of Singh, Permanent Secretary for Sugar Industry Dr. Vinesh Kumar rejected the accusations of absenteeism, confirming that Singh has made multiple visits to farmers in Ba. After the meeting, the two men continued to spar outside the venue, which highlighted the existing tensions surrounding the leadership and direction of Fiji’s sugar industry.

This incident aligns with ongoing concerns regarding the sugar sector, which has been under scrutiny due to operational difficulties, declining production, and strained relationships between officials and farmers. Former board member Arvin Singh raised alarms earlier about critical declines in the industry, calling for enhanced engagement from the government to address farmers’ grievances.

The discord between the Minister and industry stakeholders underscores the challenges facing Fiji’s sugar industry, notably the need for better communication and collaboration. Amidst these friction points, however, there remains a glimmer of hope for reform that could lead to a revitalized sector. Encouraging dialogue among stakeholders may promote a unified approach toward overcoming challenges and safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers. With collective effort, there is potential for positive change in the industry, making it more resilient and responsive to the needs of those it serves.
