Fiji Sugar Mills Boost Fire Safety After Rarawai Fire

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is taking decisive action to enhance fire prevention and disaster resilience across all its mills following a significant fire incident at the Rarawai Mill in September. Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh announced that a thorough review has been conducted, focusing on upgrading safety infrastructure, risk management protocols, and contingency plans at the Labasa, Lautoka, and Rarawai mills.

Singh emphasized that routine risk assessments, work on mill boilers, and the implementation of a standardized incident register are now integral components of FSC’s corporate safety framework. “These measures are being implemented at both the corporate and mill levels, ensuring that all facilities operate under a unified safety, risk management, and disaster preparedness framework that aligns with local industrial standards,” he stated.

The ongoing safety and modernization program aims to ensure that all mills comply with national safety standards. This initiative comes in response to the recent challenges faced at the Rarawai Mill, where a fire not only disrupted operations but also underscored the need for better maintenance and safety protocols. Previous articles have highlighted the mill’s struggles with mechanical issues, particularly regarding its boiler system, which has necessitated temporary shutdowns multiple times in the past.

Despite the setbacks, the commitment from the FSC and government to bolster operational resilience remains steadfast. By improving infrastructure and enhancing safety measures, there is a hopeful outlook for the sugar industry in Fiji, which is crucial for the nation’s economy and the livelihoods of many local communities. Stakeholders are working together to build a more robust and sustainable future for Fiji’s sugar sector, ensuring that it can recover and thrive in the face of challenges. The collaborative efforts displayed by the industry signal a commitment to stability and sustainability, reinforcing the importance of this sector for the economy and local communities alike.
