The Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) has announced the temporary suspension of operations at the Rarawai Mill in Ba due to a mechanical issue with the mill’s boiler system. The fault was detected earlier today, leading to a complete halt of crushing operations to facilitate necessary repairs.

FSC’s CEO, Bhan Singh, confirmed that technical teams are actively working on-site to address the situation as promptly as possible. The company anticipates that crushing will resume by midnight tomorrow, Thursday, July 31. Singh expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to growers and other stakeholders during this downtime.

In light of the situation, FSC has urged growers and lorry operators to stay in contact with their sector officers for the latest updates on both the repairs and the mill’s operational status. This proactive communication aims to keep all involved informed and to mitigate any disruptions to their operations.

Reflecting on recent similar situations, such as a previous boiler issue at the Lautoka Mill, the FSC has strived to maintain dialogue with stakeholders to ensure proper adjustments can be made during operational disruptions. The ongoing challenges faced by the industry highlight the importance of prompt maintenance and efficient communication to safeguard the livelihoods of those reliant on sugar production.

Despite these setbacks, the collective efforts of the FSC’s engineering teams and their commitment to resolving these mechanical issues reflect a hopeful outlook for improved operational stability in Fiji’s sugar industry as the season continues. The collaboration among stakeholders fosters resilience, paving the way for enhanced productivity and better returns for farmers in the coming months.
