The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is participating in the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London from November 26 to 29, 2024. This year’s seminar focuses on the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy.”

During the seminar, Minister Singh engaged in discussions with several international companies to enhance the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) presence in the global market. Notably, he met with representatives from Tate & Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The dialogue centered on the vital issue of sustainability, which is increasingly necessary for success in international trade.

This meeting holds historical significance, as Tate & Lyle was the largest importer of Fijian sugar during the favorable preferential pricing arrangements with the European Union. Reviving this relationship could signal a promising future for Fiji’s sugar industry.

Overall, Minister Singh’s participation in the ISO Seminar reflects a proactive approach towards ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of Fiji’s sugar market on a global scale. Such initiatives can pave the way for improved trade relationships and ultimately contribute to the revitalization of the sugar industry in Fiji, which is a key sector for the nation’s economy.
