Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry, is currently attending the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London. During the seminar, Singh engaged in discussions with several international companies to enhance the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) presence in the global market.

Notably, he held a meeting with directors from Tate and Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group, where they focused on the importance of sustainability in global markets—a crucial factor for international trade today. The historical significance of the meeting was emphasized, recalling Tate & Lyle’s position as Fiji’s largest importer of sugar during the era of preferential pricing agreements with the European Union (EU).

Singh commended Tate & Lyle’s crucial contribution to Fiji’s sugar sector and acknowledged the benefits that emerged from the guaranteed price under the EU Sugar Protocol. He expressed Fiji’s eagerness to re-establish ties with Tate & Lyle, emphasizing that any arrangements made would need to align with sustainability goals to benefit sugarcane farmers.

“The removal of preferential pricing hit us hard and our market share has been affected. However, we believe it is time for Fiji to make a strong comeback,” said Singh. The discussions also allowed for the sharing of insights into navigating the competitive global sugar market, highlighting the resilience strategies needed in these changing times.

This year, the ISO Seminar revolves around the theme of ‘Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,’ underscoring the industry’s focus on future-proofing and enhancing sustainability practices.

With Fiji’s proactive steps towards rebuilding beneficial relationships and focusing on sustainable practices, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of its sugar industry. By re-establishing important connections and emphasizing sustainability, Fiji is poised to regain its standing in the global sugar market.
