Farmers in Fiji’s sugar cane sector are urged to expand their crop cultivation beyond sugar cane to ensure financial stability as the industry faces future uncertainties. Agriculture and Waterways Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the importance of this diversification during recent discussions regarding the challenges encountered by the sugar industry.
Tunabuna noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has long advocated for sugarcane farmers to cultivate supplementary crops to enhance their income and cater to local market demands. He pointed out that there is a significant market for locally-grown vegetables, a demand that remains unmet due to the prevalent import of produce for sectors like tourism.
To address these challenges, Tunabuna indicated that ongoing discussions regarding the development of alternative crop programs aim to support farmers in supplementing their sugarcane income.
