The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, is representing Fiji at the 65th International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council Meeting and the 33rd ISO Seminar in London, which is taking place from November 26 to 29, 2024. The theme of this year’s seminar is “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy,” highlighting the industry’s efforts toward eco-friendly practices.
During the seminar, Minister Singh engaged with several international companies, aiming to enhance the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s (FSC) presence in the global market. A significant meeting featured discussions with Tate and Lyle, a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refinery (ASR) Group. The conversations revolved around the importance of sustainability in international markets, a key requirement for success in today’s economy.
Notably, the discussions held historical significance as Tate & Lyle was once the primary importer of Fijian sugar during the peak of the preferential pricing agreements with the European Union (EU). This rekindling of relations indicates a commitment to revitalize past partnerships while adapting to new market demands.
Overall, this engagement in London not only reinforces Fiji’s global sugar market position but also emphasizes the critical transition towards sustainable practices that are increasingly becoming essential in business operations worldwide. With this focus on sustainability and renewal of old partnerships, the future looks promising for Fiji’s sugar industry.
