Fiji Sugar Cane Farmers Receive Final 2024 Payment After Government Waives Deductions

Cane farmers in Fiji are set to receive their complete final payment for the 2024 season today, following a government decision to waive all statutory deductions and loan repayments. This substantial relief has been welcomed by the Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC), providing significant support to the growers.

According to SCGC Chief Executive Officer Vimal Dutt, this initiative ensures that “the full benefit of this payment goes directly into the hands of our growers.” He highlighted that this financial relief is critical for farmers to manage household expenses, clear farming costs, and re-invest in their agricultural practices.

The final cane payment for this season is pegged at $9.47 per tonne, which includes a government top-up of $8.27 and a wash-up payment of $1.20, all of which will be disbursed today. Dutt expressed that the timing of this payment, occurring just before the Deepawali festival, makes it especially meaningful, stating, “It’s a time of celebration and new beginnings, and this support could not have come at a better moment.”

He noted that the government’s ongoing support has not only provided financial backing but has also restored confidence in the sugar sector following a tough season, which saw the temporary closure of the Rarawai Mill. Dutt remarked, “The waiver reflects true commitment to the welfare of growers. It’s a strong show of faith in their hard work and in the future of Fiji’s sugar industry.”

Looking ahead, the forecast price for the 2025 season is set at $71.41 per tonne, with a delivery payment expected to be $42.85 per tonne. This trajectory indicates promising financial stability and potential growth for sugarcane farmers, reinforcing the significance of government support in enhancing the sustainability of the sugar industry in Fiji. The commitment shown today could pave the way for a resilient agricultural community, encouraging farmers to thrive despite the challenges they face in the industry.
