Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student from Nakorotubu Secondary School, has expressed her intention to pursue her tertiary education at Fiji National University (FNU) as she aims to become a nurse. During the FNU Open Day, she focused on the Food Science program and explored opportunities in the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science.
The 16-year-old noted the absence of health professionals from her village of Namarai and nearby Veidrala at the local health center. She aspires to serve as a nurse at this facility in the future. Vaturaiyawa reflected positively on the valuable information she received at the FNU Open Day, which solidified her choice of FNU for higher education.
She also mentioned the establishment of her school in 2020, where she began her studies in Year Nine in 2021. However, she highlighted challenges faced in her studies, noting that there were no Biology and Chemistry teachers during the first two terms of this year. Although a Biology and Chemistry teacher has recently joined for Term Three, the school is currently lacking a Home Economics teacher, leading the vice-principal to provide worksheets for those classes.
