Fiji is currently grappling with significant challenges related to child abuse, exploitation, and neglect, with school dropouts, educational difficulties, labor mobility, and poverty identified as contributing factors to the rising issues. Recently, concerns were raised about an increasing number of youths getting involved in violence and gang activity. Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, the UN’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children, visited Fiji to address these pressing matters.
During her visit, Dr. Najat met with Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, along with other stakeholders, to discuss the alarming trends concerning children in Fiji. She highlighted the importance of understanding the underlying drivers that lead children to violence, rather than focusing solely on punitive actions.
Dr. Najat revealed that the country is facing severe issues relating to children committing violent acts, becoming gang members, and living on the streets. She underscored the necessity of creating a legislative framework that not only prosecutes offenders but also addresses the root causes of these behaviors.
Furthermore, she expressed concern about the broader implications of peer violence and the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the underlying issues, advocating for a shift from merely implementing policies to taking decisive action to support children at risk.
Dr. Najat commended the proactive efforts of Minister Kiran, describing her as an “action-oriented leader,” and noted the supportive role of the UN team and UNICEF in addressing these challenges. Echoing previous discussions and calls for action, her visit reinforces a unified front aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth in Fiji.
There is hope on the horizon, as the collaboration among government bodies, civil society, and international organizations illustrates a commitment to fostering a supportive environment for children. Continued engagement and concerted efforts can lead to a transformative change, paving the way for a future where every child in Fiji is protected and valued.
