The Fijian government is actively monitoring the welfare of Fijian workers who are currently deployed across 496 locations in Australia as part of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. The government’s commitment to fair treatment, safety, and the overall well-being of these workers has been reaffirmed by Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh.
Minister Singh emphasizes that the Fijian authorities are engaged with the Australian government and approved employers to address various challenges faced by Fijian workers in Australia. He highlights the importance of ongoing communication and collaboration as essential measures in ensuring their rights and welfare are safeguarded.
“Our workers are at 496 locations across Australia, and while it’s not possible to visit all of them in one outing, we remain committed to ensuring their rights and well-being are safeguarded,” Minister Singh stated, acknowledging the geographical spread of the locations where Fijian workers are employed.
Recent ministerial visits across Australian states have resulted in positive outcomes, with employers demonstrating transparency in dealings and workers expressing gratitude for the support they have received. The Fijian government has implemented proactive measures, including the appointment of country liaison officers who facilitate better communication between workers and employers. These initiatives are aimed at addressing any potential issues and ensuring equitable treatment for all workers.
Singh also reminds that any PALM-related concerns from the workers should be directed to the Employment Ministry for swift resolution, reinforcing the government’s determination to prioritize worker welfare. He concluded by highlighting the significant role that the PALM scheme plays, stating, “With strong cooperation between Fiji and Australia, PALM continues to provide valuable skills, income, and opportunities for our people.”
This ongoing commitment by the Fijian government is not only dedicated to protecting its workers abroad but also enhances the broader labor environment within Fiji. The proactive approach, including regular engagement and support systems, reflects a hopeful outlook for Fijian workers, fostering a more secure and fair working experience in the international labor market.
