Fiji has proudly welcomed its latest Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Timo, a gift from Australia that underscores the strong relationship between the two countries. The official handover took place in Perth, where Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, along with Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake, participated in the ceremony.
Minister Tikoduadua expressed deep appreciation for the vessel, emphasizing that it will significantly enhance Fiji’s maritime capabilities to protect its waters, natural resources, and contribute to regional security. The RFNS Timo will replace the previously decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing a crucial gap in Fiji’s maritime operations.
Constructed by Austal, the RFNS Timo was initially intended for Timor-Leste but was renamed in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II. This vessel joins another Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Savenaca, which is similarly dedicated to the memory of a Fijian hero from the war. These advancements are part of a broader initiative to bolster Fiji’s maritime security and environmental stewardship.
The Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme continues to make strides, recently marking the delivery of its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 boats planned for the program. Minister Tikoduadua remarked that this donation not only reinforces operational capabilities but also represents the profound partnership and mutual dedication shared by Fiji and Australia.
This development is a testimony to the evolving security dynamics in the Pacific region, and it signals a hopeful future for Fiji as it enhances its maritime presence and protection efforts.
