Fiji has officially welcomed its newest Guardian-class patrol boat, RFNS Timo, a gift from Australia that reinforces the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. The handover ceremony took place in Perth, with Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, expressing deep appreciation for the support. He was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Humphrey Tawake.
“This significant addition to our maritime fleet enhances our capabilities to protect Fiji’s waters, conserve our natural resources, and ensure regional security,” Tikoduadua stated on X, thanking Australia for the generous gesture.
The RFNS Timo replaces the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, effectively addressing a previous gap in Fiji’s maritime operations. This state-of-the-art vessel was constructed by Austal, originally intended for Timor-Leste but was renamed and given to Fiji after some delays. The name Timo honors Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II.
With the addition of RFNS Timo, Fiji’s fleet now includes RFNS Savenaca (401), another Guardian-class patrol boat named in memory of a Fijian World War II sailor. Both vessels are part of a broader initiative aimed at bolstering Fiji’s maritime security and border protection capabilities while safeguarding its environmental resources.
The Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme has recently achieved a significant milestone with the transfer of its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 vessels projected in the program. “This gift symbolizes the deep partnership and shared commitment between Fiji and Australia,” Tikoduadua remarked.
This development not only enhances Fiji’s security capabilities but also embodies the spirit of collaboration and mutual support between the two nations, highlighting a hopeful trajectory for future maritime cooperation. The focus on strengthening regional security and resource protection resonates positively with both countries, paving the way for a secure and prosperous future.
