Fiji has welcomed its newest Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Timo, a gift from Australia that further cements the strong relationship between the two countries. The handover ceremony took place in Perth, attended by Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, along with Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Humphrey Tawake.
Minister Tikoduadua expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the new vessel, highlighting its importance in enhancing Fiji’s maritime security. “This remarkable addition to our maritime fleet strengthens our ability to safeguard Fiji’s waters, protect our natural resources, and uphold regional security,” he stated on X, acknowledging Australia for its vital support.
The RFNS Timo replaces the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing a previous gap in Fiji’s maritime operations. Constructed by Austal, this state-of-the-art vessel was initially intended for Timor-Leste but was renamed in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who perished during World War II.
The RFNS Timo joins the RFNS Savenaca (401), another Guardian-class patrol boat named to commemorate a World War II Fijian sailor. Together, these vessels are part of an initiative aimed at improving Fiji’s maritime security, border protection, and the preservation of its natural resources.
The delivery marks a significant milestone in Australia’s Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme, which has now handed over 21 vessels, with a total of 24 planned for future support.
“This gift symbolizes the deep partnership and shared commitment between Fiji and Australia,” Tikoduadua concluded, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in ensuring regional stability.
Comments: The acquisition of the RFNS Timo not only signifies a strengthening of maritime capabilities for Fiji but also represents the enduring bond between Fiji and Australia. This partnership is crucial for addressing regional security challenges and protecting vital natural resources. With further vessels planned, this initiative will likely continue enhancing maritime operations in the Pacific region.
Summary: Fiji has received the RFNS Timo, a new Guardian-class patrol boat from Australia, enhancing its maritime security and honoring a WWII sailor. The ceremony, attended by key figures, highlights the ongoing partnership and commitment to regional security between the two nations.
