The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, traveled to Australia on Thursday to formally take delivery of the new Guardian-class patrol boat, RFNS Timo, which will replace the now-decommissioned RFNS Puamau. The RFNS Puamau was a significant addition to Fiji’s naval capabilities but unfortunately ran aground on Fulaga Reef in Lau during a routine mission on June 10, just a month after being gifted by the Australian government.
Tikoduadua emphasized that the arrival of the RFNS Timo reinforces Fiji’s maritime capabilities, enhancing the nation’s ability to protect its waters, preserve natural resources, and contribute to regional security. He pointed out that this development underscores the strong partnership and commitment between Fiji and Australia.
This new vessel not only addresses a critical need for Fiji’s naval fleet but also showcases the ongoing collaboration between the two countries, which is essential for maintaining safety and security in the Pacific region. The RFNS Timo represents hope for improved maritime operations and a brighter future for Fiji’s maritime security strategy.
In summary, the introduction of the RFNS Timo is a positive step for Fiji, reflecting the strong ties with Australia and the commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime interests.
