A total of 337 individuals from 67 households are currently seeking refuge in eight evacuation centers across the Western Division as weather conditions deteriorate. Elimi Rokoduru, Divisional Planning Officer for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, reported that four centers were initially opened on Friday, with an additional four established as the storm intensified.
In Ba, five evacuation centers are accommodating 259 individuals, while two centers in Lautoka are housing 66 people. Additionally, 12 evacuees in Nadi are taking shelter with another family.
The harsh weather has led to flooding of roads and bridges, isolating some communities. District Emergency Operations Centres, alongside first responders, are actively monitoring the situation to ensure public safety. Rokoduru confirmed that emergency response teams are on standby, ready to assist as needed.
Although the cyclone has moved away from the area, the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings that rainbands could persist until mid-week. Rokoduru urges the public to heed official advisories and maintain vigilance during this time.
This proactive response underscores the community’s resilience and preparedness in the face of challenging weather conditions, ensuring that those affected have the support they need.
