Fijian troops are set to be deployed to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in rehabilitation efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. The contingent will include personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces as well as police officers, underscoring the collaborative approach to disaster recovery.

This deployment aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in its time of need. In his communications with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, Rabuka expressed both his sorrow over the tragic impact of the earthquakes—which have resulted in at least 14 fatalities—and Fiji’s readiness to lend assistance.

Prime Minister Rabuka is also coordinating with Australia and New Zealand to enhance logistical support for the recovery. He noted, however, that damage to the airport runway poses challenges for direct transport, necessitating travel through Santo, Vanuatu, followed by boat to the hardest-hit areas.

The seismic events have inflicted significant infrastructural damage, impacting hospitals, roads, buildings, and critical water reservoirs, as well as gas lines. Additionally, a massive landslide has obstructed the seaport, complicating the transport of essential supplies and personnel.

As efforts continue to assist Vanuatu, the resilience and solidarity demonstrated by Fiji and its neighbors embody a hopeful spirit in the face of adversity. These collaborative disaster relief efforts can lead to a stronger recovery for affected communities, fostering long-term resilience in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
