The Government is actively enhancing security measures along the popular Martintar strip in Nadi following a troubling incident that involved three crew members from Virgin Airways. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, announced that this matter will be promptly addressed in Cabinet discussions concerning the implementation of additional security protocols.

Gavoka reassured the public of the Government’s commitment to transparency in dealing with the situation and emphasized that such isolated events do not accurately represent the overall safety of Fiji. He underscored Tourism Fiji’s role in keeping key international markets updated to preserve the nation’s strong reputation as a tourist destination.

Most of the affected crew members have already returned home, while the others departed shortly after. Gavoka acknowledged that while incidents like this can occur anywhere, they are rare in Fiji. He urged both residents and visitors to exercise caution, particularly in nightlife areas.

Reiterating Fiji’s image as a secure travel destination, the minister highlighted the tourism sector’s success, noting that the country is close to welcoming a million visitors, reflecting strong travel demand. He also pointed out that airline crews often form lasting connections with the destinations they frequent, which adds to the unfortunate nature of this incident.

In light of this situation, Gavoka’s remarks provide a hopeful outlook on Fiji’s enduring safety and appeal as a tourist location, emphasizing the resilience of the tourism industry.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance for tourists and the Government’s proactive response to maintain Fiji’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. It highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure both locals and visitors can enjoy the beauty and hospitality of Fiji with confidence.
