The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have officially signed an updated memorandum aimed at enhancing overseas voter registration and awareness. This partnership, formalized last Thursday, represents a significant advancement in expanding electoral inclusion for Fijians living abroad.
Under the new agreement, Fiji’s diplomatic missions will take on clear responsibilities in supporting the FEO to facilitate voter services internationally. This includes aiding in registration processes, disseminating information related to elections, and providing logistical support for FEO staff working overseas.
Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa emphasized the importance of this memorandum, stating, “This MOU is more than just a document. It’s a commitment to every Fijian living overseas.” With over 200,000 Fijians estimated to be residing outside the country, this initiative is a crucial step in ensuring that their voices are included in the democratic process.
Dr. Raijeli Taga, the Foreign Affairs permanent secretary, welcomed the collaboration, reaffirming the ministry’s intention to work closely with the Elections Office to foster civic participation among Fijians abroad.
This initiative aligns with previous efforts by the FEO to improve civic engagement for Fijians overseas. Earlier partnerships, such as those with the Ministry of Employment, have also focused on boosting voter registration and participation among expatriates. Such moves have been vital in reinforcing the ties between Fijians living abroad and their home country, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility towards Fiji.
As the 2026 General Elections approach, the renewed focus on inclusivity and engagement through this MoU provides a hopeful perspective for the Fijian diaspora, ensuring their active participation in shaping the future of governance in Fiji. With the mechanisms being put in place, there is optimism that more overseas citizens will be able to register and vote, thereby solidifying the foundations of democracy within the nation.
