Fijian troops are set to be deployed to Vanuatu to assist with rehabilitation efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. The mission will include personnel from both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Police.
This deployment aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to aid Vanuatu in its recovery process. Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, expressing Fiji’s readiness to provide support during this challenging time. The Prime Minister shared his sorrow over the devastating impact of the earthquakes, which have resulted in the loss of at least 14 lives and ongoing aftershocks raising additional concerns.
In addition to military support, Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to ensure logistical assistance, although the local airport runway has sustained damage. The current plan is to enter Vanuatu through Santo and then proceed by boat to the hardest-hit areas.
Widespread infrastructure damage has been reported across the nation, affecting hospitals, roads, buildings, as well as two major water reservoirs and gas lines. A substantial landslide has also blocked access to the seaport, complicating the delivery of crucial supplies and personnel.
As Vanuatu begins its long journey to recovery, the international community’s support and solidarity remain vital. The efforts from Fiji and neighboring nations exemplify the spirit of cooperation and assistance in times of natural disaster.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
