The Fiji STEPS Survey 2025 reveals that body weight in Fiji reaches its peak during middle age, with both men and women between the ages of 30 and 59 exhibiting higher average weights compared to younger and older demographics. The data indicates that men outweigh women, boasting an overall mean weight of 83.9 kg.
Among the male population, those aged 30 to 44 years represent the heaviest group, averaging 87.3 kg, closely followed by men aged 45 to 59 years, who average 86.0 kg. In contrast, younger men aged 18 to 29 and older men aged 60 to 69 report lower average weights.
Women in Fiji recorded an average weight of 80.8 kg, with a similar trend observed as in men. Women aged 30 to 59 years are heavier on average than their younger and older counterparts, reinforcing the mid-life weight trend noted in the study.
Health officials have emphasized the importance of developing targeted lifestyle and nutrition interventions for adults in their working years. Such strategies aim to mitigate the long-term health risks linked with excessive body weight, highlighting the necessity for community health initiatives that address these findings. This attention to health can foster a future where individuals maintain healthier weights and improve their overall wellbeing.
