Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has confirmed that there are currently no reported cases of the new coronavirus variant NB.1.8.1 in Fiji. He noted that health authorities are actively monitoring the situation both locally and regionally, in coordination with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Atonio reassured the public that monitoring efforts are ongoing, stating, “If any credible data show a risk to Fiji, the ministry will be alerted.” The World Health Organization has classified NB.1.8.1 as a variant under monitoring, and it is presently the dominant strain in regions such as China, Hong Kong, and Australia, where it is becoming more widespread. In response to this situation, the Australian Government has encouraged its citizens to receive coronavirus booster shots.
Although Fiji’s health ministry has not issued any new public advisories concerning the variant, they remain vigilant and prepared to respond as necessary. The proactive stance taken by the Ministry of Health highlights the country’s commitment to public health safety and readiness in the face of evolving health threats.
In light of this information, the situation underscores the importance of maintaining health vigilance across the Pacific region. As authorities continue to monitor the trajectory of coronavirus variants closely, the community can take comfort in knowing that robust measures are in place to respond to any potential threats, fostering hope for continued safety and health stability in Fiji.
