Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed that Israel has the right to defend itself against threats in the Middle East, emphasizing that Fiji’s stance remains supportive of Israel. In an interview with FijiLive, Rabuka expressed sorrow over the significant loss of life resulting from ongoing conflicts, noting the impact on regional peace.
When asked about Fiji’s defense of Israel, particularly in light of its military actions in heavily populated areas of the Gaza Strip, which include many women and children, Rabuka maintained that Israel is entitled to self-defense. He acknowledged the tragic nature of these conflicts, stating that there is always a human cost associated with the pursuit of peace and stability.
Rabuka remarked that peace should be characterized by the absence of fear, emphasizing the need for international relations to aim for such outcomes without fear.
In related comments, Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator Penny Wong, described the situation in the Middle East as divisive and tragic. She highlighted Australia’s commitment to engaging in respectful discussions on the issue while seeking ways to foster peace and stability in the region. Wong stated that Australia aims to contribute positively as a middle power globally, aspiring for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous area.
Additionally, the Israeli Defence Force reported that it targeted Hamas command centers located near two schools in the Gaza Strip—al-Zahraa School and Abdel Fattah Hamoud School—during recent strikes. Meanwhile, Palestine’s Wafa news agency has reported that an Israeli attack on the Bureij refugee camp resulted in the deaths of at least 15 Palestinians.
