Fiji experienced its second consecutive draw in the MSG Prime Ministers Cup, held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, after battling to a 1-1 tie against Papua New Guinea. The team, coached by Marika Rodu, had also drawn its opening match 1-1 against Vanuatu earlier this week.
The game began with Papua New Guinea taking the lead, thanks to a goal from veteran player Raymond Gunemba in the 23rd minute. However, Fiji’s determination shone through when Sairusi Nalaubu equalized in the 73rd minute, following a well-executed play involving Christopher Wasasala and Thomas Dunn. Dunn’s precise pass enabled Wasasala to outmaneuver the goalkeeper before assisting Nalaubu, who easily tapped in the equalizer. This goal marked Nalaubu’s second in the competition.
The match experienced a temporary halt of 15 minutes due to adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms and lightning. Fortunately, play resumed once the storm passed, allowing the teams to complete the final moments of the match.
This performance highlights Fiji’s resilience and ability to compete on an international level, showcasing promising talent within the squad. Fans can look forward to future matches, hoping the team builds momentum and secures victories in upcoming competitions.
