The Fiji Football Association (FFA) and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) have successfully forged an agreement to resolve a double booking issue concerning the HFC Bank Stadium, which had the potential to disrupt two major sporting events this July. The FFA had already secured the venue for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Nations Cup scheduled from July 5-19, while the FRU made a subsequent booking for a Test match against Scotland set for July 12.

After a week of negotiations, both organizations, represented by FFA CEO Mohammed Yusuf and FRU General Manager Operations Sale Sorovaki, reached a mutually beneficial compromise. The OFC Women’s Nations Cup remains a priority, with the match between Fiji and Scotland given the go-ahead for July 12 at 3.35 PM. The football match preceding it will take place on July 11, with an efficient plan to prepare the ground for both sports, ensuring the pitch is restored to meet the standards required for international football.

In outlining the arrangements, Yusuf stated, “They have been allowed until Sunday 12 midday, so they have 18 hours to clear all branding and markings,” indicating strong collaborative efforts from both federations and the Fiji Sports Council. This coordination aims to uphold high-performance standards in both sports while allowing fans to enjoy two significant sporting events.

The success of this negotiation marks a hopeful step forward in managing Fiji’s sporting events, especially following previous tensions over venue allocation. The spirit of cooperation demonstrated between the FFA and FRU offers an optimistic outlook for future collaborations, fostering a vibrant sports culture and enhancing Fiji’s representation on international platforms.

The positive relationship developed through this agreement serves as a promising foundation for improved communication and management between the sporting organizations, reinforcing a unified vision for the future of both rugby and football in Fiji.
