Gilbert Vakalalabure, the Chief Executive of the Fiji Sports Council, will not face suspension but will begin annual leave next week, as confirmed by Acting Board Chair Peter Mazey following an emergency board meeting. Mazey clarified that the board has yet to discuss or decide on Vakalalabure’s suspension.
In light of various concerns raised over recent weeks, an independent investigation is being initiated. The board is in the final stages of appointing an external investigator, aiming for a thorough review of all issues brought to attention, including those raised by stakeholders and on social media platforms. Mazey emphasized that the investigation scope has expanded significantly to cover all matters presented to the board.
To ensure a comprehensive review, the board has developed extensive terms of reference for the investigation. Mazey noted that it is imperative for the investigation to maintain full independence and to avoid any conflicts of interest, recognizing the close-knit nature of professional and personal relationships in Fiji.
The board is considering two firms for conducting the investigation: an Australian-based company with local offices and a domestic firm. Negotiations are currently ongoing, with another board meeting scheduled soon to finalize the details. The investigation is projected to cost less than $50,000, significantly lower than the expenses associated with a Commission of Inquiry, which can run into the millions.
Mazey expressed optimism that the selection of the investigator would be finalized within the next two days, and the complete terms of reference will be made public accordingly. He also noted that he was stepping in for the board chairman, who participated in discussions virtually due to flooding in Lautoka, ensuring the board’s ongoing commitment to address all concerns raised, including those related to human resources, operations, and coaching staff.
The board plans to convene again soon, reinforcing their commitment to transparency and thoroughness in the investigation process.
