The Flying Fijians have clinched the top spot in the Pacific pool of the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup after securing a commanding 50-19 victory over Tonga in Nuku’alofa on Friday.

With this victory, Fiji advances to the semi-finals in Tokyo next weekend, where they will face either Japan or the USA from the Asia pool. Manu Samoa will also progress as the runner-up from the Pacific pool.

Fiji’s captain Tevita Ikanivere, who scored a try during the match, emphasized the need to improve discipline, especially after allowing Tonga back into the game midway through the first half. He noted the team’s focus on maintaining discipline, particularly after their bye week leading up to this challenging match against Tonga on their home ground.

Tonga’s captain Ben Tameifuna praised his players for their effort, stating it is always challenging to play against their Fijian counterparts. He mentioned that the young team is learning and gaining experience, which is crucial for their development.

The Flying Fijians took an early lead, going 19-0 ahead in the first quarter thanks to three quick tries from Iosefo Masi, Ikanivere, and flanker Elia Canakaivata. However, Fiji faced a setback when center Adrea Cocagi was yellow-carded, which was later upgraded to a red card, leaving them with 14 players.

Tonga capitalized on Fiji’s temporary disadvantage, scoring several tries to bring the score to 19-14 at one point. Despite the pressure, Fiji regained their composure, allowing them to lead 26-19 at halftime.

The second half saw referee Agnus Gardiner enforcing tight control while allowing both teams to play aggressively. Fiji extended their lead with a goal from Caleb Muntz and later saw Tabuavou score a critical try, bringing the score to 36-19. As the match progressed, Fiji continued to dominate, culminating in Masi scoring an intercept try that sealed the game at 50-19.

Crown Prince Tupouto’a and around 4,000 local fans attended the match, which celebrated 100 years of rugby between Fiji and Tonga. This victory also served as a birthday celebration for Captain Ikanivere, who received a special cake from the Fijian community after the match.

As both teams prepare for their next challenges, Fiji heads to Japan for the semi-finals, while Tonga will face Canada in the fifth-place playoff.
