Fiji Soars to Victory: 50-19 Over Tonga to Claim Pacific Pool Crown!

The Flying Fijians secured the top position in the Pacific pool of the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup after a convincing 50-19 victory against Tonga in Nuku’alofa on Friday. This win ensures their place in the semi-finals next weekend in Tokyo, where they will face either Japan or the USA from the Asia pool. Manu Samoa will also advance as the runner-up from the Pacific pool.

Fiji’s captain, Tevita Ikanivere, who contributed a try during the match, emphasized the importance of discipline. He noted that the team had to regain control after allowing Tonga to make a comeback in the first half. “We spoke about discipline because towards the end of the first half we dropped and let Tonga into the game,” Ikanivere remarked, highlighting the preparations that took place during their bye week.

Tonga’s captain, Ben Tameifuna, praised his team’s effort, expressing gratitude to his players for their resilience. He acknowledged the challenge of facing their Fijian counterparts and pointed out that despite their youth, the team is learning and improving. “This is the stepping stone for us as Ikale Tahi,” Tameifuna stated, emphasizing the importance of experience for his younger players.

The Flying Fijians established an early lead, scoring 19 points in the first quarter of the match. They secured three tries in quick succession, with Iosefo Masi, Ikanivere, and Elia Canakaivata all contributing to the scoreboard. Despite being reduced to 14 players due to a yellow card for Adrea Cocagi, Fiji maintained pressure. Tonga capitalized on this opportunity, scoring two tries to narrow the gap, but Fiji managed to lead 26-19 at halftime following a late try from Canakaivata.

In the second half, Fiji extended their lead with a penalty goal and continued to dominate. Muntz successfully converted additional tries, including a powerful effort from Ratu Meli Derenalagi. Although Tonga fought hard, the Fijian side held firm, and Iosefo Masi secured the final score with an intercept try, sealing the game at 50-19.

The match was witnessed by around 4,000 fans and marked a historic moment, celebrating a century of rugby between Fiji and Tonga. The victory also served as a birthday celebration for captain Ikanivere, who received a cake from the Fijian community post-match. Both teams will head to Japan, with Fiji progressing to the semi-finals and Tonga facing Canada in the fifth-place play-off.
