Fiji Soars to Semi-Finals with Dominant Win Over Tonga

The Flying Fijians have claimed the top position in the Pacific pool of the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup, following a decisive 50-19 victory against Tonga in Nuku’alofa on Friday.

With this win, Fiji advances to the semi-finals in Tokyo next weekend, where they will face either Japan or the USA from the Asia pool. Manu Samoa will also proceed as the runner-up from the Pacific pool.

Fiji’s captain Tevita Ikanivere, who contributed to the score with a try, acknowledged the team’s need to improve their discipline to secure the victory. He noted that they became disorganized midway through the first half, allowing Tonga to compete effectively.

“We discussed the importance of discipline because towards the end of the first half, we let Tonga back into the match,” Ikanivere stated. “We had a bye week last week and worked hard, understanding that playing Tonga on their home ground would be challenging.”

Tonga’s captain Ben Tameifuna expressed pride in his team’s effort, thanking his players for their determination. He highlighted the youthful nature of the squad and their learning journey, stating, “This is a stepping stone for us as Ikale Tahi. Our focus is on providing opportunities for our young players.”

Fiji started strong, quickly establishing a 19-0 lead thanks to three early tries. However, following a yellow card for Fijian center Adrea Cocagi, who was later issued a red card, Tonga capitalized on their numerical advantage.

Flyhalf Patrick Pellegrini’s efforts helped Tonga close the gap, and they leveled the score at 19-19 with a try from Pellegrini himself. However, Fiji regained control before halftime, leading 26-19.

The second half saw Fiji slowly seize control. A shot at goal by Caleb Muntz gave them a 29-19 advantage. Subsequent tries increased their lead, and an intercept try by Iosefo Masi capped off the scoring for the Flying Fijians at 50-19.

The match was a celebration of 100 years of rugby between Fiji and Tonga, marking their first encounter since their first test match in 1924. The victory also coincided with Ikanivere’s birthday, which was celebrated by the Fijian community with a special cake after the match.

Both teams will head to Japan on Monday, with Fiji preparing for the semi-finals while Tonga faces Canada in the fifth-place playoff.
