The Flying Fijians have secured the top spot in the Pacific pool of the Pacific Nations Cup 2024 series, achieving a decisive 50-19 victory over Tonga in Nuku’alofa on Friday.
This victory propels them into the semi-finals in Tokyo next weekend, where they will face either Japan or the USA from the Asia pool. Manu Samoa will also advance as the runner-up from the Pacific.
Fiji’s captain Tevita Ikanivere, who scored a try during the match, emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline to secure the win. He noted that the team needed to refocus after allowing Tonga to gain momentum midway through the first half.
“We discussed the need for discipline because towards the end of the first half, we fell short, and that allowed Tonga back into the game,” he commented. The team had utilized a bye week prior to this match to prepare, understanding the challenges posed by playing on Tonga’s home turf.
Tonga’s captain, Ben Tameifuna, expressed pride in his team’s effort and acknowledged the challenges of facing their Fijian counterparts. He pointed out that the young Tongan squad is learning and evolving, viewing this as a valuable experience.
“This is a stepping stone for us as Ikale Tahi,” Tameifuna stated. “Our focus is on giving our young players opportunities to step up, as this experience will benefit them moving forward.”
The Flying Fijians began the match strongly, leading 19-0 in the first quarter, marking another significant win against Tonga in their 95-year rugby history. Early tries from Iosefo Masi, Ikanivere, and flanker Elia Canakaivata helped establish this lead.
Despite being reduced to 14 players after a yellow card for Fijian centre Adrea Cocagi, the team maintained their composure. Tonga capitalized on this by scoring, which brought them closer, but Fiji quickly regrouped and managed to close the half with a 26-19 advantage.
In the second half, the contest remained fierce, with both teams striving for control. Fiji’s Muntz added to their lead with a penalty goal, and soon after, replacement player Inia Tabuavou scored, pushing the score to 36-19.
With the support of around 300 Fijian fans in attendance, Fiji continued to dominate the match, culminating in a final score of 50-19 after Masi intercepted a pass for a clear run to the try line.
The match was a highlight in the grand celebration of 100 years of rugby between the two nations, marking the first Test meeting since 1924. Additionally, the victory served as a timely birthday celebration for captain Ikanivere, who received a special cake from his community members post-match.
As both teams prepare to head to Japan on Monday, the Fijians gear up for their semi-final clash while Tonga will play Canada in the fifth place playoff.
