The FIJI Water Flying Fijians have climbed to ninth place in the latest World Rugby rankings following their impressive 41-17 win over Japan last weekend, securing the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. Previously ranked tenth, their rise is attributed to test matches against the Barbarians in June, and Georgia and New Zealand in July.
During the Pacific Nations Cup, Fiji showcased their strength by defeating Samoa and Tonga with scores of 42-16 and 50-19, respectively. In the semi-finals, they dominated the USA with a 22-3 victory before facing Japan in the final.
With Fiji’s advancement in the rankings, Australia has made its first drop to tenth place. Meanwhile, Argentina has ascended to sixth, while South Africa and Ireland have switched places for the top ranking.
As the Flying Fijians look to build on their success, they are preparing for matches against Ireland, Scotland, and Wales as part of the Autumn Internationals in November. They have incorporated new players from the Pacific Nations Cup, which adds depth and versatility to the team as they prepare to challenge highly ranked Northern Hemisphere teams.
Fiji’s highest world ranking was seventh in 2023, and with upcoming matches against top-tier opponents, coach Mick Byrne’s squad has a chance to match or surpass this ranking.
Their November schedule includes a match against Scotland on November 3 at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, followed by a clash against Wales on November 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. They will conclude their year with a significant test against current world number one, Ireland, on November 24 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
