The Fiji Water Flying Fijians delivered a powerful second-half display to overpower Japan, clinching a 41-17 victory and securing their sixth Pacific Nations Cup title.
Ponipate Loganimasi made an impressive debut, contributing significantly with two linebreaks and two tries within just 24 minutes on the field. Caleb Muntz, who was named player of the tournament, showcased his versatility and strong game management throughout the match.
The early stages saw Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging penalties, but it was Japan’s Dylan Riley who ignited the match with a brilliant try in the 20th minute. After evading multiple tackles, Riley skillfully chipped the ball over the defense and touched down after outpacing the opposition to the bouncing ball. Lee converted the try, raising hopes for the home fans.
Fiji appeared to have scored their first try soon after, but Inia Tabuavou’s effort was disallowed following a review that revealed a knock-on. However, just a minute later, Fiji found the scoreboard through a cleverly orchestrated play involving Tabuavou that set up Vuate Karawalevu to score, leveling the match with Muntz’s conversion.
The teams went into halftime even, with Japan down to 14 men after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card. Japan held firm during their period of numerical disadvantage but could not contain Fiji’s depth and energy in the second half.
Muntz extended Fiji’s lead with another penalty before a well-executed team move allowed Loganimasi to score in the corner. Muntz converted from a challenging angle, giving Fiji a 10-point cushion. He then executed a brilliant 50/22 kick, setting up further attacking opportunities for Fiji.
Fiji continued to apply the pressure, with Tuisue crashing over for a try despite heavy defending from Japan. Salawa’s audacious offload enabled Karawalevu to secure his second try of the night. Loganimasi capped off his stellar performance with another try, gliding past coverage from Japan’s full-back Lee. Japan’s Malo Tuitama salvaged a late consolation try for the home crowd, but it was Fiji’s night as they celebrated their historic victory.
