Fiji Shortlists Dr. Raijeli Taga for New Zealand High Commissioner Post

The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Fiji, Dr. Raijeli Taga, has submitted her application to become the country’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, as confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. During an interview at Burerua Village in Tailevu, Rabuka noted that Dr. Taga is on the shortlist of candidates for the role, which will be filled once the current High Commissioner, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, returns to Fiji.

Dr. Taga, who transitioned to her role as Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs from the Office of the Prime Minister last September, has a strong background with previous positions including Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources. She earned her PhD in Mining Engineering with a focus on Environmental Toxicology from the University of Queensland.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened discussion surrounding the representation of women in senior diplomatic positions in Fiji. Historically, the country has seen few female high commissioners and ambassadors, despite the presence of many women in leadership across various sectors of public service. Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its commitment to enhancing women’s participation in diplomacy, and Dr. Taga’s application may reflect a positive shift towards greater gender balance in high-ranking roles.

In addition, the Fiji High Commission in Wellington is crucial in managing political, trade, labor mobility, and consular matters for many Fijians residing in New Zealand. The recruitment for this prestigious position aligns with Fiji’s strategic goal of strengthening its diplomatic influence in the region.

As the selection panel proceeds with its assessments, a formal announcement regarding the appointment is anticipated. Overall, the candidacy of Dr. Taga symbolizes not only her individual qualifications but also a hopeful shift towards increased female representation in Fiji’s diplomatic endeavors, which could enrich the nation’s international dialogue and partnerships.
