Fiji secured its first victory in the 2024 Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Ministers Cup, triumphing over the Solomon Islands Development team with a decisive 3-0 scoreline in Honiara. Following a mixed start in the tournament where they drew 1-1 against Vanuatu and managed to hold Papua New Guinea to a draw as well, Fiji’s performance markedly improved, especially in the second half after a scoreless first half.
The breakthrough came when Setareki Hughes netted a remarkable free-kick in the 71st minute, setting the stage for more goals. Shortly after, Penisoni Tirau, a young player from Ba, made a significant impact by coming off the bench to score his debut international goal just a minute later, catching the opponents off guard. Nabil Begg, also a substitute, sealed the victory with a goal in the 86th minute, emphasizing Fiji’s dominance in the match.
With this victory, Fiji now stands at five points from three matches and is gearing up to face the Solomon Islands again in their final match on Saturday.
This win reflects Fiji’s resilience and growth throughout the tournament, showcasing not only their talent but also their ability to adapt and improve. The upcoming match offers an exciting opportunity for the team to build on their momentum and end the tournament on a high note.
