Fiji celebrated a significant victory in the 2024 Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Ministers Cup held in Honiara, dominating the Solomon Islands Development team with a score of 3-0. This win marks Fiji’s first in the tournament, showcasing a notable improvement in their gameplay.
After initially drawing 1-1 with Vanuatu and coming from behind to tie against Papua New Guinea, the Fiji team, under the guidance of coach Marika Rodu, showcased a stronger performance, especially in the second half following a scoreless first half.
The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Setareki Hughes executed a brilliant free-kick to put Fiji on the scoreboard. Shortly after, Ba’s young talent Penisoni Tirau entered the match as a substitute and made an immediate impact by scoring his inaugural goal for the senior team just a minute later, surprising the opponents. Nabil Begg, who also made his way onto the field as a substitute, sealed the victory by scoring Fiji’s third goal in the 86th minute.
With this win, Fiji now accumulates five points from three matches and looks ahead to a decisive encounter against the Solomon Islands on Saturday.
This victory not only boosts Fiji’s confidence in the tournament but also highlights the potential of emerging players in the squad. The team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure are promising signs for their upcoming matches.
