Fiji celebrated a significant victory by securing its first win in the 2024 Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Ministers Cup, defeating the Solomon Islands Development team with a scoreline of 3-0 in Honiara. This triumph marks an upward trajectory for the Fiji team, following earlier matches where they managed draws against Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

The match displayed substantial improvement in Fiji’s game, especially in the second half after an uneventful opening. Setareki Hughes opened the scoring with an impressive free-kick in the 71st minute. Moments later, substitute Penisoni Tirau, a young talent from Ba, marked his debut international goal, extending Fiji’s lead and surprising their opponents. Nabil Begg, who also came off the bench, solidified the victory by scoring the final goal in the 86th minute.

With this win, Fiji now holds five points from three matches and is set to face the Solomon Islands again in their final group match on Saturday.

This performance reflects a growing confidence within the Fiji team, highlighting the potential of younger players stepping up on the international stage. As they prepare for their final match, there is a hopeful spirit among the team and their supporters, suggesting a bright future for Fijian football on the regional scene.
