Olympic silver medalist Ponipate Loganimasi made an impressive debut for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, scoring two tries as the team claimed victory over Japan with a score of 41-17 in the Pacific Nations Cup final held in Osaka last night.
Loganimasi came on as a substitute in the second half, contributing to the Fijians’ strong performance after a challenging first half that ended in a 10-10 tie. Japan initially took the lead with a penalty kick by fullback Seungsin Lee in the 7th minute. However, Caleb Muntz quickly equalized for Fiji with a well-placed kick just a minute later.
Japan’s Dylan Riley then scored a notable try, giving the hosts a 10-3 advantage in the 19th minute, which was successfully converted. Though Fiji’s Inia Tabuavou had a try ruled out after a TMO review, winger Vuate Karawalevu managed to score in the 31st minute, leveling the game at halftime.
In the second half, Fiji took control with a penalty from Muntz in the 54th minute, putting them ahead 13-10. Loganimasi soon made his mark, sprinting to score in the corner. Fiji continued their momentum with a third converted try from Albert Tuisue in the 63rd minute, followed by Karawalevu’s second try of the match, assisted by flanker Kitione Salawa.
Loganimasi added a second try, sealing the win for Fiji, while Japan was awarded a consolation try late in the match for their determination.
