Fijian Elections Office (FEO) Supervisor Ana Mataiciwa has announced significant changes regarding the release of election results in the upcoming general election, moving away from the use of their mobile application that played a controversial role during the 2022 polls. This decision comes in light of previous challenges, including inconsistencies and errors that arose from the app, which led to confusion among stakeholders as different sources displayed varying results.
Mataiciwa addressed the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, acknowledging that the mobile application contributed to discrepancies in results due to the constant data uploads required from the results team. She pointed out that this pressure affected the verification processes, ultimately compromising the reliability of the updates provided. The confusion was significant, with the app often displaying different information compared to the FEO website and the official data supplied to media outlets.
To mitigate these issues, the FEO will reinstate the media center that was previously utilized in earlier elections. This facility will provide journalists with access to verified results in real time from the national results center, fostering greater transparency in the election process. “We are planning to bring back the media center so media stakeholders can get live updates as results come in,” Mataiciwa stated, emphasizing the importance of reliable communication for all stakeholders involved.
This shift aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance electoral integrity in Fiji following the disruptions experienced in the last election cycle. Past investigations revealed that human errors, particularly those tied to data transfer, were responsible for many inaccuracies in the reported results. As the country prepares for the next general election, the FEO aims to implement quality assurance mechanisms and ensure that processes are more transparent to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
Political observers have noted that these proactive measures are crucial for rebuilding trust and maintaining democratic standards as Fiji moves forward. The commitment from the FEO to improve communication and transparency indicates a positive direction toward a more reliable electoral process. With these efforts, there is hope that Fiji will enhance its democratic principles in upcoming elections, ultimately leading to a stronger and more trustworthy electoral framework.
