Fiji Airways men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has placed a strong emphasis on defensive strategy in his selection for the upcoming second leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series. The squad features two fresh additions, both of whom are noted for their defensive skills, which Kolinisau believes are crucial for the team’s success throughout the tournament.
Douglass Daveta stands out as a remarkable defensive organiser. Since joining the national sevens setup, he has impressed with his ability to manage sweeping responsibilities effectively, anticipate offensive kicking strategies, and deliver high-level playmaking skills. Kolinisau highlighted Daveta’s vocal leadership on defense as a valuable asset, particularly when it comes to managing the backfield and coordinating the forwards.
Nacani Bogonisoko complements Daveta’s skills with his aggressive defensive style and impressive work ethic. His presence is expected to add physicality to the team’s upfront engagements. Kolinisau expressed confidence in Bogonisoko’s readiness for his national debut, noting that despite not having previous opportunities, he has shown consistent dedication and defensive prowess during his time within the national team’s wider squad. Kolinisau likens Bogonisoko’s playing style to that of Joji Nasova, emphasizing his strong focus on defense.
Fiji will begin its title defense with a match against Great Britain at 4:32 PM this Saturday, followed by a face-off against Spain at 7:58 PM, and concluding their pool games against South Africa at 11:46 PM. With a strong focus on defense, the team seems poised to tackle the challenges ahead in the series with confidence and determination.
