Fiji Rugby Union Chair John Sanday has praised the advancements within the national sevens program, highlighting the team’s impressive performances throughout the HSBC Sevens World Series. Currently, Fiji holds the top position in the standings, having won the title in Singapore, finished as runners-up in Perth, and achieved top-four placements in all four tournaments held so far.

Sanday attributes this success to a combination of patience and a trust in the developmental approach spearheaded by head coach Osea Kolinisau. He remarked, “Things take time to build. We have to give the coach time to make some mistakes and learn and grow.”

A crucial aspect of this growth, Sanday noted, is the investment in local coaching talent. He expressed the belief that real progress comes through providing opportunities for local coaches to gain experience. “The whole idea is to get our local coaches, give them the extra, throw them in the deep end and let them grow. They’re starting to show that we can do it,” he explained.

Sanday is confident in Fiji’s ability to compete at the highest levels of rugby, reiterating the nation’s potential by stating, “We’re in Fiji, we’re world-class.” As the Fiji Men’s 7s and the Fijiana 7s teams prepare to return to action in Vancouver this weekend, they are focused on continuing their strong start to the season, aiming to build on their success and reinforce Fiji’s reputation in the rugby world. This commitment to developing local talent and fostering a successful team environment sets a positive tone for the future of Fiji rugby.
