The Fiji men’s national sevens team is gearing up for the HSBC SVNS Dubai tournament, which kicks off on Saturday. Former Fiji sevens winger Vilimoni Delasau emphasized the importance of executing fundamental skills for the team to succeed in the competition. Delasau expressed confidence in the players, noting that while the tournament may be challenging, he believes they have prepared well and can perform admirably.

He pointed out that the team’s fitness has noticeably improved since the Mataso sevens and that competing teams in the HSBC SVNS series are all well-prepared and fit. Delasau is optimistic about the squad selected by the coach and believes that reaching the top four is achievable. He mentioned that while losing in the quarterfinals wouldn’t be ideal, it’s reasonable given that this is their first tournament of the series.

Delasau hopes for the team to reach the finals, regardless of the outcome, and encourages players to show unity and pride in representing Fiji. He notes the importance of restoring the passion for the game that he feels has waned among some players in recent years.

The Fiji men’s team is in a competitive pool, facing Spain, the United States, and New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Fijiana team is grouped with Ireland, Australia, and China.

The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s rugby sevens team has been adjusting to the Dubai climate since their arrival. Head coach Osea Kolinisau praised the support from UAE Rugby, which has allowed the team to acclimatize and practice ahead of the tournament. Feelings of gratitude were expressed, highlighting the significance of preparing adequately for the challenges ahead.

The tournament kicks off with Fiji’s fixtures as follows:
– Saturday: Fiji vs. Spain at 6:06 pm, followed by Fiji vs. United States at 9:52 pm.
– Sunday: Fiji will face New Zealand at 3:10 am.
For the Fijiana team, Saturday will see them compete against Ireland at 5:44 pm and Australia at 9:05 pm, with a match against China on Sunday at 1:13 am.

As the tournament approaches, fans are hopeful that the Fijian teams will showcase their skills and passion on the world stage, reigniting the spirit of rugby among their supporters.
