The Fiji men’s national sevens team is gearing up for the HSBC SVNS Dubai tournament, set to begin on Saturday. Former Fijian sevens player, Vilimoni Delasau, emphasized the importance of mastering the fundamentals of the sport to enhance their chances of success. He expressed optimism that the players have the potential to excel and acknowledged the improvements in the team’s fitness observed during the Mataso sevens.

Delasau noted the high level of competition among teams in the HSBC SVNS series, which poses a significant challenge. Yet, he has confidence in the coaching staff’s capabilities, believing they have selected the right players to aim for a top-four finish in the tournament. He expressed that even a quarterfinal exit would not be a disappointment, as long as the team demonstrates their efforts.

Delasau called on the players to unite and play from the heart, stressing the need for the team to take pride in representing their country. He lamented that some recent players have lost the passion to don the national jersey, and he hopes to see a revival of that spirit in the upcoming squad.

The Fiji men’s team is in a competitive pool with Spain, the United States, and New Zealand, while the Fijiana side faces Ireland, Australia, and China.

Since arriving in Dubai last week, the Fiji men’s team has been acclimatizing to local weather conditions. Head coach Osea Kolinisau expressed gratitude to the UAE rugby community for their support, which includes access to facilities for training. Kolinisau believes that the team’s preparations will greatly benefit from these training sessions in preparing for their matches.

Along with Delasau’s hopeful outlook, there is a palpable excitement surrounding the tournament as both the men’s and women’s teams prepare to showcase their skills on the international stage.

Fixtures for the Fijian teams include matches against Spain, the United States, and New Zealand for the men, while the Fijiana side will take on Ireland, Australia, and China.

With a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, the Fijian teams are poised to make a strong impression in Dubai, inspiring hopes for a successful tournament ahead.

Overall, this anticipation reflects a commitment to upholding the pride and heritage of Fiji’s sevens rugby, and there is a shared hope that the teams will connect with the passion that has historically defined Fijian rugby.
