Joji Nasova, a talented rover for Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens, has set his sights on capturing the series title next year. The native of Toge, Ba, played a crucial role in his team winning the HSBC SVNS title after participating in 25 tournaments, a milestone that he described as “sweet,” crediting the victory to their teamwork.
At 26 years old, Nasova made his debut at the prestigious Hong Kong sevens just months after showcasing his skills at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands. His impressive performance led to him being selected by coach Osea Kolinisau to represent Fiji at the Paris Olympic Games in July, where the team clinched a silver medal.
Nasova expressed his gratitude, stating, “I can only thank God for all He has provided for me,” while emphasizing the importance of collaboration for future success. He believes that with discipline, both on and off the field, the team can achieve great things.
Reflecting on his journey, the former Dominion Brothers player noted that rugby has become a vital means for supporting his family, especially after he did not complete high school or secure formal employment. He highlighted the sacrifices he’s made and how far his dedication to the sport has brought him.
Adding to the family spirit, Nasova’s brother, Iliavi Masori, is also a member of the national sevens extended squad, and they both showcased their talents together at the Honiara Pacific Games.
As the men’s sevens team takes a two-week break, they will regroup in January to prepare for the Perth 7s, scheduled for January 24-26. This moment of rest and reflection could serve as a pivotal point for the team as they aim for new achievements in the upcoming season.
Overall, this story of perseverance and teamwork highlights how dedication to sport can open doors for personal and family growth, inspiring others along the way. The next chapter for Nasova and his teammates holds great promise as they continue to chase their dreams on the rugby field.
