Iliavi Masori is living his dream as he rejoins the Fiji men’s rugby sevens training squad for the second time. Originating from Toge village in Ba, he is the younger sibling of Jioji Nasove, a renowned winger who helped the team secure a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games.
“I never thought I would be part of the national sevens team. I am incredibly grateful to my family for their tremendous support,” Masori expressed. His journey included playing for the Dominion Brothers Under-21 squad before he was initially chosen for the national training squad, only to be sidelined by injuries.
Reflecting on his second chance, Masori said, “I am thrilled to be training once again, despite the intensity of the sessions. It feels especially rewarding to train and play alongside my older brother, Nasova.”
Masori has maintained determination throughout his rugby career, overcoming challenges, especially injuries. He noted differences between the coaching styles of Ben Gollings and Osea Kolinisau, with Kolinisau emphasizing the importance of diet and practical advice during training.
Looking ahead, Masori is hopeful about making his debut during the upcoming Dubai Sevens tournament from November 30 to December 1. “If given the opportunity, I will seize it wholeheartedly, focusing on improving my weaknesses on the field and adapting my approach to the game,” he remarked. He appreciates the guidance provided by Nasova, who encouraged him to keep striving for success instead of returning to their village.
In related news, the Fiji men’s sevens team is determined to end their winless streak in the HSBC SVNS by clinching the Dubai Sevens title. Veteran player Suliano Volivoli shared in an interview, “We’ve encountered numerous challenges, but we remain committed to our preparations.” Volivoli emphasized the team’s eagerness to win, given the prolonged period since their last victory in Dubai.
He highlighted Kolinisau’s focus on mental and physical readiness, explaining the importance of perseverance. Volivoli added that the squad has developed a strong bond, combining fresh talent with experienced players. “The team has been training for three months, with just one week left before we depart for Dubai. We will participate in the Mataso tournament to gain valuable playing time ahead of the Dubai competition.”
This story reflects not only the dedication of the athletes but also the deep familial support system that fuels their aspirations. With their sights set on victory, the team embodies resilience and hope as they approach the challenges ahead.
In summary, Iliavi Masori is grateful for a second chance with the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, while the squad is determined to secure a victory at the Dubai Sevens tournament, showcasing their commitment to growth and perseverance.
